Aspartame Case History

While this is just one case study, the argument for and against Aspartame is right up there with the current media blitz of sugar vs high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Only worse.

I think the idea that HFCS is bad for us, and worse than sugar, has caught by the general population. The problem is that we turn to artificial sweeteners with the misconception that we are maintaining taste and flavor, and while reducing simple carbohydrate intake. I'm guilty of this!

This is a big deal, especially for those of use with Type II Diabetes. We shy away from sugar, which by the way is nearly impossible to do unless you simply don't eat. We scour the label of the boxes and cans at the grocery store looking for the magic words such as sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Then we take bad advise and use an artificial sweetener, something usually with Aspartame in it. We trade one evil for another, only to complicate an already unhealthy situation.

Now if I could force myself to drink unsweetened coffee and tea, that would be an achievement. There's always hope if it doesn't kill me first.
