Experts Discuss The Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet

Yet another side to the rice and potato effect on blood sugar level. Isn't it ironic how we crave the things that are hurting us such as bread, potatoes and rice? The article has a very nice graphic that illustrates what foods we should or should not eat. That is if glucose and insulin levels are a problem for you.

Wild Rice and Mushroom Soup with Chicken Recipe

There's something about a big bowl of hot soup that just makes me feel good inside. This particular recipe, if prepared correctly, would be quite nutritious and filling. Fresh mushrooms are one of natures super foods. Wild rice is much better than white or fried rice if you need to watch your blood-sugar level. Brown rice may be another alternative in that case. Additional reference: Improving Your Recipes One Step at a Time

The down side to this recipe is the sodium and cholesterol. If these two guilty pleasures are a problem for your health, there are alternatives. Replace the chicken with tofu or Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP). TVP is generally available in health food stores or from Amazon. There's probably a small selection of "fake" meats in your local grocery store in the frozen foods section.

As for the sodium, which is mostly from the chicken broth, look for low sodium broth (any flavor). Also the more colorful the vegetables, the better they are for you.

Shock finding: More than 75 percent of all 'honey' sold in grocery stores contains no honey at all

I like honey. In fact I've started substituting it for sugar in my coffee. But after reading this, I may be better off using the sugar. This is quit alarming, and the FDA isn't doing much about it. You'll be shocked when you see some of the brands, and read what some of the manufactures have to say.

Sulfur Food List

Sulfur, you don't think of it as something your body needs. Just the thought reminds me of a bad smell. Some places I've visited, the tap water had a sulfur smell to it. Seems the body needs sulfur, and if it doesn't get it will take it from your bones. If you suffer from Arthritis or joint pain, this is something you should read. New stem cell research could aid in battle against bulging waistlines

This is promising. There a whole market of pills, and exercise equipment, and other contraptions "designed" to help you lose weight. As someone who used to be a distance runner, and exercised 7 days a week in the Army, I was still constantly harassed about my weight. I went through all the nutritional counseling and education, logged everything i put in my mouth, yet my weight did what it wanted to do.

But in recent years there has been a movement toward the idea that some people are predisposed to carrying extra weight, or they have more fat cells than they should. The article is not suggesting either of these.

Scary Food Science

It's amazing how something can taste so good but be so bad for us. Fast foods and processed foods alike are all around us. It's become part of the fabric of life on Earth. In the world of our busy lifestyles, modern conveniences, and the need to have it now, processed foods are practically unavoidable.

When I was growing up, my mother rarely opened a can or a box of food. She made most everything from scratch. We had a garden, and what came out of that garden is what we ate most of the summer. The rest was canned then used as needed. Yes canned, you know, with those Mason jars you see in the dollar store? It's a lost art to say the least. Anyhow, we would can what we could to preserve it to needed. No preservatives or chemicals.

We got meat from the butcher, from the cow. One year we had deer meat form a deer I killed myself. We used to even get milk from the dairy, the kind that had to be shaken before being drank because it came straight from the cow. Can't do that nowadays, all milk has to be pasteurized by law.

So my mother, who didn't work (a sign of the times that once were), would start dinner in the morning. It takes time to make something truly homemade, like spaghetti, stuffed peppers, or soup. During the summer and when weather permitted, we cooked on the grilled. We ate allot of baked potatoes, fried zucchini, egg plant, fresh cucumbers and tomatoes.

But nowadays, a home cooked meal comes from a can or a box. We, as a society, do not take the time to properly prepare food anymore. Our health is all evident of that.

This is an enlightening article of things yo may or may not know about processed food. We all need to be reminded to avoid putting bad things into our bodies. I hope you find it informative and useful.

Is Gluten Bad For You?

Overall I would say that Gluten is bad for you. Of course, not everyone has to worry about it. But if you have or developing Type II diabetes, have have high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, you should limit or eliminate gluten intake.

It's not just bread, it's crackers, snacks, and just about all baked goods. Take a trip to the grocery store and try to find foods that do not have gluten in it. This includes wheat, wheat flour, and most types of flour.

If you are that person that has to high a blood sugar count, you should serious limit or eliminate gluten intake. I'm not a doctor, but I know from first hand experience. Just not eating bread, I felt better, and my blood pressure dropped overall. And the side effects of the Metformin were lessened.

When I first started taking Metformin, it basically laid me out sick and asleep. Part of that was my diet, what the medicine was interacting with. But equally important was the warning that says to "take with food". That didn't mean before I ate, or after I ate. It meant between bites. The symptoms have all but disappeared when I follow that.

But Gluten intake and Medicine are only half of the equation. Two other major factors are sugar intake and exercise. All four of these things blend together to lower my blood sugar level. More to follow in a future post.

Is There More Nutritional Value in Organic Food?

The argument in the article is simply to ask the question "is there a nutritional difference between organically grown food and chemically enhanced food?" I would say that is not why people buy organic food, especially for their children. It wasn't why we fed our children organic baby food. It had everything to do with the term "organic" and how the food is grown. Simply put, all of us will get exposed to enough chemically and genetically altered food in our lifetime. If we can delay that for the first few years at least, maybe it will make a difference in our health (or rather our child's health).
