Aspartame Case History

While this is just one case study, the argument for and against Aspartame is right up there with the current media blitz of sugar vs high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Only worse.

I think the idea that HFCS is bad for us, and worse than sugar, has caught by the general population. The problem is that we turn to artificial sweeteners with the misconception that we are maintaining taste and flavor, and while reducing simple carbohydrate intake. I'm guilty of this!

This is a big deal, especially for those of use with Type II Diabetes. We shy away from sugar, which by the way is nearly impossible to do unless you simply don't eat. We scour the label of the boxes and cans at the grocery store looking for the magic words such as sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Then we take bad advise and use an artificial sweetener, something usually with Aspartame in it. We trade one evil for another, only to complicate an already unhealthy situation.

Now if I could force myself to drink unsweetened coffee and tea, that would be an achievement. There's always hope if it doesn't kill me first.

Quick Whole Grain Spelt Bread

Definitely have to try this recipe. I'm an O blood type, my body loves bread. Unfortunately, the doctor disagrees. Whole grain bread off the shelf is expensive, costs lots more then regular bread. Moreover, you cannot know what is in it, regardless of the label. There are many ways to "hide" sugar in processed food. If you're lucky the labels will simply say "sugar". But often is says fructose, dextrose, corn syrup, or some other exotic term.

To compound things, the printed ingredients on the package are so small, those of us that are at that age where we don't see as well anymore are not be able to read it.

This recipe does have honey in it which I'm sure you could leave out if you wish. Either way, using this recipe, you'll know there are no hidden ingredients and no preservatives.

However, one word of caution. You may want to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil instead of Canola Oil. There's some bad press about Canola oil and it's affect on the body, especially those with type 2 diabetes. Canola Oil is a mostly a "genetically modified" product. See this article for more details.

Your comments are welcomed, especially if you try the recipe. I'd love to hear from you.

How to Eat More Fiber at Every Meal

A few years ago when I created this site, I wasn't all that careful about what I ate. That's a dangerous prospect for someone on the backside of 40. Just recently I've had to change some things in my life due to concerns about my blood pressure, weight, and sugar levels. With that in mind it has become necessary for me to reduce or avoid the carbohydrates, and go for things that are, you might say, less palatable.

Mind you, according to Dr. Mercola, I have a blood type that is genetically desirable to meat and potatoes, actually stems from the Neanderthal period. OK, for the ladies reading this, go ahead and laugh and have fun with that one.

So when I found this article this morning, I had to share it. This is another informative article from our friends at care2.com. Enjoy.

Skip Milk? 5 Reasons Why

I never was a milk person. Unless I was eating cake, cereal, or some type of pastry, cold water is still my preference.

I can remember, as a kid growing up in Pennsylvania, we'd go to the dairy and get milk that came right from the cow. Had to shake it up cause it had cream on top. Nowadays in most states, you're not allowed to sell milk like that. I suppose that by some measure, the FDA figures the pros outweigh the cons of forcing pasteurization and homogenization before milk can be consumed. And let's not forget that it's become an industry of its own. Still it's hard to not see how pasteurization and homogenization are not benefiting consumers. Factor in the bad things they add to milk, and it's really a no-brainer.

Top 10 Superfoods for Spring

Honestly, these are good any time of year if you can get them. Some are a bit exotic and may not be available at your average grocery store. Others are common and available in many food stores. My picks on the list are strawberries and asparagus. I hope you find this article useful.

10 Tips for Weight Loss After 40

This is a subject near and dear to me being in that over 40 group. There's allot of good information here, some common sense, some are little know facts. The tidbit about artificial sweeteners is worth its weight in gold. And the part about not starving yourself, I used to do that years ago while in the Army. I hope you will find some benefit from the article.

Vitamin D Linked to Diabetes, Cancer, Depression, and More

This is another one of those no-brainers. With more and more of us staying indoors these days in front of our computers and TV's, we do not get the necessary Vitamin D from the sun. The article also sites plenty of good food sources to get Vitamin D.
